Mastodons win 2nd Straight

Fort Wayne, IN- The IPFW men’s basketball team used a 22-3 run in the second half to storm past Morehead State, Saturday night at the Memorial Coliseum, by the final of 78-75.

In a see-saw first half, the Eagles (3-3) took control late and opened up a 40-36 margin at the half, on the strength of 22 points from guard Ricky Menard.

Menard and company opened up the second half on fire, growing that half-time lead to 12 points.

But, the ‘Dons took the game by the throat at the 11-minute mark, and didn’t let go. They went on a 22-3 run which game IPFW a seven point lead with only a minute left. The most impressive part of that run, was that on 18 possessions, the Mastodons got 16 stops, with Justin Hawkins (Fr/F/Garrett, IN) providing a blanket on Menard.

Things got a little interesting late, with five seconds left, and IPFW up four points, MSU guard Chez Marks leaned in from the outside and tried to draw a foul on a jumper. He wasn’t fouled, but the basket was good. There was a discussion for five minutes about whether the shot was a three or a two. Originally call a two on the floor, Morehead State was given three points to make it 76-75.

But, Terry Collins (Jr/G/Fort Wayne, IN) sealed the deal with a pair of free-throws, making the final 78-75.

Collins was the high scorer for IPFW with 21 points.

Freshman point guard Beau Bauer (Walton, IN) nailed 17 points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc. Junior center David Simon (Vernon Hills, IL) added fifteen.

Menard was the games high-scorer, filling it up for 37.

The road doesn’t get any easier for IPFW. They will head to Purdue University this weekend for the Boilermaker’s Invitational. The Mastodons will take on Purdue, Saturday (12/20) at 3:30 pm. They will either face Miami, OH or SMU on Sunday.
