Noll Featured Speaker at Bonzi Wells Camp

(August 4, 2003) Fort Wayne, IN—IPFW Head Men’s Basketball Coach Doug Noll was the featured speaker on the final day of the 2003 Bonzi Wells All-Star Basketball Camp, held at Leo High School.

Coach Noll, accompanied by IPFW standouts Keion Henderson and David Simon, spoke to the group of over 150 about what it takes to be successful in the game of basketball and beyond. “I wanted to talk to them about work habits, and what it takes to get them to where they want to get,” Noll said. “I really wanted them to realize that you just don’t raise your hand and say I want to be a good player, there is a lot of hard work that is involved.”

Henderson, an ordained minister, told the group that maximum effort is the only way to achieve your goals. “Never walk away from a game, or anything that you do, feeling that you could have done more”, said the 6’ 5” senior from Gary, Indiana. “Always give your maximum effort, it is the only way you will get better,” he added.

Simon, along with being a force on the court, is also a standout in the classroom. He stressed that you have to have a passion for everything that you do. “You should wake up each day, not wanting a couple more hours of sleep, but excited about having the whole day to accomplish something”, the 6’ 10” junior told the group. “Work as hard in class as you do on the court so if things don’t work out, you have your education to fall back on.”

Coach Noll feels that these types of community activities are important not only for the youngsters in attendance, but also for IPFW. “Now that we’ve gone Division I and are playing the Purdues and the Michigan States of the world, we need to get out into the community and show the people that we’ve got a pretty good group of kids here, and that they are pretty good basketball players,” he said. “Academically they are very solid, and we’ve got some exciting things going on here at IPFW.”

This is the first year the Portland Trailblazer’s star has had the camp.

Along with Coach Noll, the camp featured Wells’ teammate Zach Randolph, new Sacramento King Brad Miller, and college stars Luke Recker and Tom Coverdale.

IPFW will open the 2003-04 basketball season on November 17th with an exhibition game against the Harlem Globetrotters, at the Memorial Coliseum at 7pm. Tickets for this, and all, Mastodon home games can be purchased by calling (260) 481-6000 or email ipfwtix@ipfw.edu.
