Broncs Busted

Fort Wayne, IN– In a defensive effort that resembled that of Nolan Richardson’s Arkansas teams of the early 90’s, IPFW put the lock down on UT-Pan American, Sunday night at the Memorial Coliseum, holding the Broncs to six second-half field goals, on the way to a 66-49 win.

IPFW held UTPA to only 30-percent shooting from the field.

The Mastodons (7-21) owned a four point lead at half-time (27-23), with senior center David Simon leading the way with 12 points, but the ‘Dons big man picked up his fourth foul at the 14:07 mark in the second half and had to head to the bench.

After the Broncs (12-15) cut the IPFW lead to three (31-28), the ‘Dons went on a 17-2 run to blow the game wide open. Freshman forward Pete Campbell came off the bench, hit two triples, and finished off a conventional three-point play, as the lead grew to twenty-two points.

Simon returned late in the second half, and caused more defensive mayhem en- route to the Mastodons’ 4th straight win at home. He led IPFW in scoring with 19 points. Simon also had nine rebounds, three blocks, and three steals.

Campbell finished the night with 11 points, as did sophomore guard Beau Bauer.

UTPA’s top scorers were Eric Montalvo and Sergio Sanchez, each with seven.

The win avenges IPFW’s earlier 83-74 loss to the Broncs at the UTPA Fieldhouse on January 31st.

IPFW will finish the 2004-05 campaign, hosting Utah Valley State on Saturday, March 5th at the Memorial Coliseum. Game time is 7pm.
