Valpo Survives in OT

Valparaiso, IN– A dunk by senior center David Simon with .02 left in overtime was waived off by officials, giving Valparaiso a 74-72 win over the Mastodons, on Wednesday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Simon, who had seemed to beat his man to the hoop, to tie the game at 74 and send it to a second overtime, was called for a hook, ending a fantastic battle.

IPFW (6-21) stood toe-to-toe with the Crusaders (15-12) all evening, in a game that featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes.

It looked like Valpo had finally gotten free of the Mastodons, taking a five point lead with just .40 seconds left in regulation, but a big three pointer by freshman forward Pete Campbell, and a soft jumper in the lane by sophomore guard Quintin Carouthers, sent the game to OT tied at 64.

The Crusaders and 'Dons each had four players hit for double figures. IPFW was led by David Simon, who was dominant, with a game-high 26 points and eight rebounds.

Campbell tossed in 13 points, and sophomore guards Beau Bauer and Carouthers added 10 points each.

Valpo was led by Dan Oppland with 21 points.

IPFW out-shot Valpo in the game 50.9% to 42.1%, but was out-rebounded by ten (39-29).

This was the final road game for IPFW in 2004-05. The 'Dons have two games left at home. UT-Pan American arrives for a game on Sunday night at 6pm and Utah Valley State enters the Coliseum on March 5th.
