Advising Responsibilities

The Responsibilities of Students

Students at IPFW are ultimately responsible for accomplishing their educational goals and progressing toward graduation. Students will benefit most from academic advising only when they accept a major responsibility for seeking timely advice.

IPFW students have the following responsibilities:

  • To be knowledgeable about university, school, and departmental program requirements.

  • To consult with their academic advisor whenever appropriate and in a timely manner.

  • To be prepared for all scheduled academic advising sessions.

  • To make academic decisions based on the information obtained or recommendations offered (Academic advisors will not make decisions for students.).

  • To act upon academic decisions in a timely manner.

  • To maintain their own records of academic progress, including documentation of approved exceptions to stated program requirements.

  • To seek additional or supplemental advice from other university personnel as needed or recommended.

  • To present and candidly discuss factors (such as employment, commuting distance, and other circumstances) which might influence the advice, course selection, and other factors related to progress toward their academic objectives.
