Advising Responsibilities

Department Chair Responsibilities

The department chairs have the primary responsibility for academic advising in their departments. Allowing for flexibility to fit variations in departmental operations, the chair may delegate none, some, or all these responsibilities. Always, accountability rests with the chair.

The chair has the following responsibilities:

  • Appoint a lead advisor.

  • Provide academic advising for all students in the department, including first-year students.

  • Maintain a student record system that is based on and consistent with the school record system.

  • Establish the department’s procedures for dealing with students’ unavoidable problems with degree progress (e. g., the occasional need for course substitutions), documenting the solutions, and communicating them to the school.

  • Initiate a graduation audit of student records the semester before the intended graduation.

  • Provide workshops on departmental academic advising and support services.

  • Evaluate annually the academic advising and the academic advisors in the department.

  • Recognize and reward advisors who fulfill their advising responsibilities.

  • Recommend special merit increments for advisors whose performance is exemplary.
