Report of the 2006 Archaeological Investigations at Kethtippecanunk (12-T-59), Tippecanoe County, Indiana (15 MB). By Michael Strezewski, Robert G. McCullough, Dorothea McCullough, Craig Arnold and Joshua J. Wells. Contributions by James R. Jones III, and Leslie Bush IPFW-AS
Reports of Investigations 703. July 2007.
In the summer of 2006, the Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne Archaeological Survey (IPFW-AS) conducted geophysical survey and excavations at the site of Kethtippecanunk (12-T-59), located within Prophetstown State Park, near Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. In the late eighteenth century, Kethtippecanunk was the hub of Native and Euroamerican trade in the central Wabash valley and was occupied by a mixed population of French and British traders and Native Americans. The town was burned in 1791 after an attack by the Kentucky militia. The site is located at a strategic point near the confluence of the Tippecanoe and Wabash rivers, on a terrace remnant of the Wabash River. 352 pages. View/download ROI 703

The Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene Occupation of the Kankakee Region of Northwest Indiana (11 MB). By Andrew A. White. Contributions by Craig Arnold and Joshua Wells IPFW-AS
Reports of Investigations 702. August 2007.
This report describes grant-supported archaeological research conducted by the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Archaeological Survey (IPFW-AS) during 2006 and 2007. This research comprised the third year of the Northern Indiana Paleoindian Project. Work included both field survey and documentation and analysis of private artifact collections in the Kankakee region of northwest Indiana. The primary objective was to collect data to clarify and address gaps in our basic knowledge of the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene hunter-gatherers that inhabited this region around 12,000 - 8,000 B.C. At the geographic scale of analysis represented by the sample, variation in projectile point shape may be a clinal phenomenon related to change through time. Patterns of lithic raw material use and hafted biface morphology demonstrate that the early prehistory of the Kankakee is connected to that of adjacent regions. Data collected during this project can be combined with other data and used to test explanatory models of early hunter-gatherer systems in this part of the midcontinent. 262 pages. Archaeology in a Public Venue at the Strawtown Enclosure (12-H-883): 2006 (14 MB). By Craig R. Arnold, M.A., Colin Graham, Scott Hipskind, Dorothea McCullough, Ph.D., Robert C. McCullough, Ph.D., and Mariah Yager. IPFW-AS
Reports of Investigations 701. July 2007.
This report details grant-funded research conducted by the Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne Archaeological Survey (IPFW-AS), at the Strawtown enclosure (12-H-883), located in the developing Strawtown Koteewi Park in Hamilton County, Indiana, during Indiana Archaeology Month in 2006. The goal of the current research was to collect household-level information to address questions of cultural processes in sedentary societies of a prehistoric frontier where Fort Ancient, Western Basin, and Oneota-like cultures overlapped. The broader research agenda was integrated with a proactive public program to increase awareness of archaeology and archaeological methods and goals. Excavations open to the public at the Strawtown enclosure were designed to encourage public participation and education. Volunteer labor and public outreach were important components. During the three weeks of excavations, over 3,000 individuals visited the site. 207 pages. View/download ROI 701

Archaeological Investigations at Site 12-T-59 and Two Other Locations in Prophetstown State Park, Tippecanoe County, Indiana (3,155k). By Michael Strezewski, James R. Jones III, and Dorothea McCullough. IPFW-AS
Reports of Investigations 513. February 2006.
The Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Archaeological Survey (IPFW-AS) completed archaeological and geophysical survey and testing within three areas of Prophetstown State Park, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. This work was conducted under contract with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Division of Engineering, per the terms of an American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) grant from the National Park Service to evaluate a number of areas within the park that were possibly associated with the Battle of Tippecanoe, which took place in November 1811. The results of this project included enhanced definitions for the site of Kethtippecanunk (a Native American and French trader’s village), and other areas of the park. 209 pages. (12-La-84, 91, 92, 522 526) in the Kankakee Marsh of Lake County, Indiana
(13 MB). By Sarah L. Surface-Evans, Donald H. Gaff, and R. Brian Somers with contributions by Leslie L. Bush and Scott D. Hipskind
IPFW-AS Reports of Investigations 503. May 2005.
At the request of Vulcan Materials Company, Inc. of Lombard, Illinois, the Archaeological
Survey of Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW-AS) conducted Phase II
subsurface archaeological testing of five previously documented archaeological sites (12-La-84,
91, 92, 522, 526) in Lake County, Indiana. Investigations were conducted under permit #200456 from the
Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology.
Work performed by the IPFW-AS included hand excavation, geophysical survey, mechanical
excavation, and pedestrian survey. Significant cultural resource components were recognized at five sites, ranging from
the Paleoindian through the Late Prehistoric periods. Metric and descriptive artifactual and feature data are presented.

Phase II Excavations
at the Kosko Site (12 Ko 492), Kosciusko County, Indiana (1,539k).
By Andrew A. White, with a contribution by Leslie L. Bush.
IPFW-AS Reports of Investigations 218. October 2002.
The Kosko
site was identified as a lithic scatter situated on a sand hill complex
overlooking wetlands adjacent to the Tippecanoe River. Phase II excavations
in a small portion of the site resulted in the discovery and documentation
of several truncated features, including the remains of an earth oven, two
possible roasting pits, and a possible posthole. The only diagnostic
artifact from the site was a PaleoIndian biface fragment recovered from the
plowzone. The overall character of the deposits and materials from
the area suggest the dominant occupation of the site occurred during the
Archaic period. 71 pages. View/download ROI
