Adjusting to University Life

Veterans: Transforming From Soldier to Student

As a veteran, you have just returned from a life altering experience. You may have been away from your family for a long period of time, lived at risk of death or injury, you may have seen others hurt or killed, and your perspective on life is not the same. Fitting in on the college campus may feel uncomfortable at first. It may feel strange to find that others are going through their everyday motions in a carefree manner. Relationships may have changed, and old friends may have graduated and moved on.

After homecoming, you may have found that people, who once relied on you, have managed by themselves. You may need more attention from your partner than they have time for. Resentment can build if either you or a partner have not met each other’s expectations. Problems may present themselves and it will take time to get back on track.
