NY Times Project: Erin Frew and Mike Wolf are directing a usage survey project. Questions have been taken from the USA Today Survey, but mostly they are our own. The survey will be conducted by students and take place after break. Andy Downs will investigate the possibility of putting one of the copies at each rack on a wooden rod in order to assure that at least one is always available. Jackie Haydock expressed support for the project, commenting on the positive student reaction. She will support our request for 2004-05 funding from IPSGA. Campus Audit: Laurie Corbin reported that few faculty responded to the survey about ADP related activities in their classrooms. She and Susan Hannah will update the campus survey and put it on the web. Jim Perry Jim is acting as coordinator for the ADP projects in the IU-system. He led a discussion of what we can do increase the capacity and synergy across campuses and of how we can effectively serve the communication needs of ADP. He reported support for annual meetings such as the one held at IUK and plans for a meeting of campus ADP directors. He is launching an IU ADP website at www.americandemocracy.iu.edu to assist in communication among campuses. FACET: The FACET Leadership Institute in April will focus on ADP. IPFW faculty Glenda Moss, Mary Ann Cain, Steve Carr, and Elliott Blumenthal will attend and report back to the Steering Committee. Action Team Reports: Each of the four goal teams presented their plans for discussion. Copies of the initial plans are attached. 1. “Competent and Responsible Citizens”: Mike Wolf, Convener Goals to be addressed in the classroom focused on students gaining “a grasp and an appreciation of the history and fundamental processes of American democracy.” Action plans included (1) affirming citizenship preparation as a goal of the baccalaureate degree, (2) creating a requirement within General Education Area I or Area III and (3) faculty development strategies to help faculty model democratic processes in the classroom. The team also identified goals to be addressed through campus culture, especially during the freshman year. 2. “Value Skills for Active Engagement”: Pat Ashton, Convener The group proposed four learning objectives and proposed methods to operationalize each one. The values to be emphasized are respect for each others’ rights to free and open speech and inquiry; informed understanding of skills that facilitate effective interpersonal relationships with diverse groups; recognition of the importance of civic engagement and confidence in the ability to make a difference; responsibility for the welfare of others and active engagement in community action to achieve common goals. Operationalization plans included faculty development to teach faculty how to facilitate civil debate in their classrooms and sponsorship of forums to encourage civil discourse; implementation of the proposed diversity requirement; support for service learning and adoption of a graduation requirement for community service. At this point, the meeting adjourned until March 23, 2004 when discussion of the action team reports will continue. |
